Nixon obtains settlement with Springfield appliance maintenance businesses; companies to pay $8,955 in restitution and costs
October 10, 2008 - Three Springfield businesses and their owner who accepted payment from consumers to repair appliances but failed to complete the jobs or provide refunds will comply with state consumer protection laws and pay a total of $8,955 in restitution and costs under an agreement with Attorney General Jay Nixon. Nixon reached the assurance of voluntary compliance with Ron Bass and the three businesses he owns, Dependable Same Day Service Inc., America’s Same Day Home Repair Service Inc., and America’s Home Services Inc.
Nixon announces multi—state settlement with pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly; Missouri to receive $1.5 million
October 8, 2008 - The state of Missouri will receive $1,547,959 as part of a $62 million nationwide settlement with Eli Lilly and Company arising from alleged improper marketing of the antipsychotic drug Zyprexa, Attorney General Jay Nixon announced today. Missouri is one of 33 states joining the multi—state consumer protection—based pharmaceutical settlement.
Buchanan County judge commits Savannah man as sexually violent predator
October 6, 2008 - A judge in Buchanan County on Friday (Oct. 3) found Roger Wooten of Savannah to be a sexually violent predator (SVP) and committed him to the state treatment center in Farmington. Circuit Judge Daniel F. Kellogg signed the judgment and commitment order.
Nixon files lawsuit against Sullivan home builder who was paid by consumers for shoddy or non—existent work
October 6, 2008 - A Sullivan man who operates a homebuilding business that was paid tens of thousands of dollars to perform construction projects for consumers but then either failed to complete the work or did so using substandard workmanship is the target of a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Jay Nixon. Nixon’s lawsuit against Jason Woods, who does business as Timber Ridge Construction, was filed in Franklin County Circuit Court and seeks injunctive relief, restitution and civil penalties.
Nixon says Missouri should stop penalizing state employees deployed overseas in National Guard, Reserves
October 3, 2008 - The state of Missouri needs to support its employees who are deployed overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and other locations as members of the National Guard or Reserves by ensuring that they continue to receive their full salaries, Attorney General Jay Nixon said today. Nixon said those employee—soldiers overseas and their families back home in Missouri should not suffer a financial penalty because they have been deployed to serve our country.
Nixon files challenge to EPA; says agency decision could lead to transfer of Missouri River water to Red River basin
October 2, 2008 - Attorney General Jay Nixon is challenging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in order to stop an EPA decision that could help pave the way for the transfer of water from the Missouri River basin to the Red River basin. As the leading proponent for Missouri’s interests in the Missouri River, Nixon has opposed plans for out—of—basin transfers for more than 15 years.
Nixon obtains order shutting down fraudulent St. Louis home remodeling business; consumers to receive $85,266 in restitution
October 1, 2008 - The owner of a St. Louis home repair and remodeling business who was paid by consumers for jobs he either failed to complete or that featured shoddy workmanship is permanently barred from the home repair business in Missouri and must pay $85,266 in consumer restitution under a consent judgment obtained by Attorney General Jay Nixon. The Attorney General’s consent judgment against Timothy Burke of St. Louis, owner of J.T. Contracting, was filed in St. Louis County Circuit Court.
Nixon will recover $3.8 million in Medicaid fraud case against Pennsylvania pharmaceutical company
September 30, 2008 - Attorney General Jay Nixon today said his Medicaid Fraud Control Unit will recover more than $3.8 million for taxpayers under an agreement with a Pennsylvania pharmaceutical company that marketed three of its drugs for uses not approved by the Food and Drug Administration and rewarded some doctors who frequently prescribed the drugs. As a result of the scheme, Nixon said, the three drugs made by Cephalon Inc. were prescribed more often than they normally would have been, and Medicaid programs in Missouri and the other states paid too much in reimbursement for the drugs.
Wright County jury commits Squires man as sexually violent predator
September 26, 2008 - A jury in Wright County on Wednesday (Sept. 24) found Charles Herrmann to be a sexually violent predator (SVP) and committed him to the state treatment center in Farmington. Circuit Judge Lynette B. Veenstra signed the judgment and commitment order.
Lawrence County jury commits Monett man as sexually violent predator
September 26, 2008 - A jury in Lawrence County on Tuesday (Sept. 23) found Charles Saige to be a sexually violent predator (SVP) and committed him to the state treatment center in Farmington. Circuit Judge Larry W. Meyer signed the judgment and commitment order.
Assistant Attorney General receives prestigious award from the Missouri Bar
September 23, 2008 - Jayne T. Woods, an Assistant Attorney General in the office of Attorney General Jay Nixon, recently received a prestigious David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Award from the Missouri Bar. The award was presented at an awards banquet during the Missouri Bar meeting in Kansas City on Sept. 19.
Jury commits Everton man as sexually violent predator
September 22, 2008 - A jury in Vernon County on Friday (Sept. 19) found Paul Bowles to be a sexually violent predator (SVP) and committed him to the state treatment center in Farmington. Circuit Judge Neal R. Quitno signed the judgment and commitment order.
Nixon seeks restitution from Jefferson City home remodeler who was paid for work not done or done poorly
September 16, 2008 - Attorney General Jay Nixon is taking legal action to recover restitution for three Jefferson City families who paid a home remodeling business for work that was never completed or done so poorly that it caused damage to their homes. The Attorney General today filed a lawsuit in Cole County Circuit Court against Trademark Remodeling and Renovations LLC and Kenneth Scott Jinson. Jinson also does business under the name Five Star Home Solutions.
Attorney General Nixon publishes updated Missouri Sunshine Law booklet to reflect recent change in the law
September 15, 2008 - A new booklet published online and in print by Attorney General Jay Nixon contains the latest changes to Missouri’s open meetings and records law, popularly known as the Sunshine Law. The 80—page booklet is available at no charge to state and local officials, members of the media, and the general public. Printed copies of the booklet can be ordered through the Attorney General’s Web site at ago.mo.gov or by calling the Attorney General’s office at 1—800—392—8222; the booklet also may viewed on the Web site.
